Advice on inventions please!?

I have an idea for a simple household item that I think may prove to be popular...Im not sure how to go about getting it all started...I know patents are very expensive ...is there a cheaper way to protect an invention...without getting ripped off...what do I do next...any good websites that I can visit...thanks in advance!
